How This Passport Photo Maker Works

When you press "Change Background", your browser downloads a small person detection model (MediaPipe Image Segmenter) and runs it on your device to tell the person apart from the background. The background is replaced with the solid color you choose while the person stays as is. All of this happens on an HTML canvas in your browser; no image is sent to a server.

That is the AI model that finds the outline of the body and the background. Such models usually run on a server, but here it runs in your browser on purpose so your photo never has to be uploaded. It is downloaded only once because the browser caches it, so later visits are usually faster.
35x45 mm is the passport and visa size in the UK, the EU, Australia, India and many other countries. The United States uses 2x2 inches (51x51 mm) for passports and visas, and Canada uses 50x70 mm for passports. Rules differ per document, so always check the official requirements before printing.
Most passports and visas require a plain white or off-white background (the US asks for white, the UK for light gray or cream). Some ID cards and school or company badges use blue. When in doubt, pick white.
