How This Background Remover Works

When you press "Remove Background", your browser downloads the IS-Net AI model (Dichotomous Image Segmentation), which is trained to separate the main subject from its background. The model runs directly on your device, using the graphics card through WebGPU when available and the regular processor otherwise. It produces a transparency mask that is scaled back up to the size of your original photo, so edges stay smooth and the resolution does not drop.

No. The AI model that separates the subject from the background is downloaded to your browser and runs directly on your device. Your original photo is never sent to SoftwareHub or anyone else, so it is safe to use for personal photos and for product shots that are not public yet.
That is the AI model and the engine that runs it. Other services run models like this on their servers, which means your photo has to be uploaded. Here it runs in your browser on purpose so the photo stays on your device. The download happens only once; after that it is stored in your browser and ready instantly next time. On a limited data plan, use Wi-Fi the first time.
There is no watermark and the result keeps the resolution of your original photo. The only exception is very large photos (above 16 megapixels, such as 48 MP shots from flagship phones), which are scaled down to about 16 megapixels so phone browsers do not run out of memory.
The model is a general one, not limited to people, so it works on product photos, portraits, pets, food, vehicles and other objects. You get the cleanest result when there is one clear main subject whose colors stand out from the background.
Every image format your browser can open, such as JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP, AVIF and SVG. HEIC and HEIF photos from iPhones are supported too, with an extra converter that loads automatically when your browser cannot read them itself. Camera RAW and TIFF files are not supported yet; convert them to JPG first.
Both keep the transparent background. PNG is the safest choice because almost every app and marketplace accepts it, while WebP files are much smaller, which suits websites and sending over chat. The WebP button is hidden if your browser cannot create WebP files.
Very fine strands of hair, transparent objects such as glasses, and backgrounds with colors close to the subject are the hardest cases for any AI model. Retake the photo against a plainer background with brighter light for a cleaner cut-out.
In browsers that support WebGPU (recent Chrome or Edge, the latest Safari) it usually takes just a few seconds. In other browsers the model runs on the regular processor, which can take up to about a minute on a phone. Keep the page open until the result appears.
